Hydroseeding on the Ridge and in Town

Hydroseeding in Snoqualmie happens in a very wet place. The 1991 to 2020 normals show about 63.28 inches of precipitation a year over 181.2 days. That is great for germination and hard on bare soil. The city sits next to Snoqualmie Falls at about 568 feet, roughly 28 miles east of Seattle.

Snoqualmie Ridge lawns

In the mid-1990s the city annexed 1,300 acres for the master-planned Snoqualmie Ridge, with 2,250 homes in the first phase and 1,850 more in Ridge II after 2004. Lawns from that build-out are now old enough to need renovation in many cases. Overseeding, aeration and topsoil top-dressing are common jobs, along with full reseeding where turf has gone to moss.

Former mill land

The city annexed 593 acres of the former Weyerhaeuser mill site and mill pond (Borst Lake) in 2012. Redevelopment of ground like that needs temporary cover on stockpiles, silt fence near the pond and the river, and final hydroseeding once grades are set.

Mulch is the key

With rain on more days than not for much of the year, we lean on a quality fiber mulch with tackifier for lawns and a bonded fiber matrix on any slope. Seed sitting on bare soil in a Snoqualmie winter is likely to wash.

Logging roots

The valley's first lumber mill was built around 1872 at the mouth of Tokul Creek, and logging and milling shaped the town for more than a century. Older lots near town can still have wood debris or compacted fill under the surface, which we clear before seeding.

Snoqualmie Questions

My Snoqualmie Ridge lawn is full of moss. Can it be saved?

If grass is still under the moss, aeration and overseeding help. If it is mostly moss, stripping and hydroseeding is more reliable.

Does all this rain mean I never water a new lawn?

In the wet season you rarely need to. In July and August you still do, even here.

What do you use on slopes in Snoqualmie?

Bonded fiber matrix or blankets. Plain mulch on a slope in this rainfall is a gamble.

Can you seed stockpiles on a redevelopment site?

Yes. Temporary seeding keeps stockpiles from washing until they are used.
