Seeding in Renton's Valley and Highlands

Hydroseeding in Renton runs from the flat ground at the mouth of the Cedar River, on Lake Washington's southeast shore, up to the East Renton Plateau and the south flank of Cougar Mountain. The city's eastern edge passes through May Valley before dropping to the Cedar River's north bank. That is a lot of variety for one service area.

Rivers that moved

Before the Lake Washington Ship Canal was finished in 1916, Renton was prone to flooding from the Cedar River and the Black River. Lowering the lake let the Cedar be redirected into Lake Washington, and the Black River largely disappeared. Low-lying parts of the city sit on ground shaped by those old channels, and we check drainage and finish grade carefully before seeding there.

Plateau and hillside lots

On the plateau and Cougar Mountain side, lots are higher and often sloped. Those get the slope treatment: bonded fiber matrix or erosion control blankets, silt fence along the downhill edge and a lawn mix only where the grade allows mowing.

Coal and clay history

Renton's early economy relied on coal mining, clay production and timber. On older industrial ground, surface soil can be poor; spreading clean topsoil before seeding is often the difference between a patchy lawn and a good one.

Redevelopment

The Landing is a 68-acre development on former Boeing land, and downtown redevelopment began in the mid-1990s. Large commercial sites need construction hydroseeding for open areas and long runs of silt fence and inlet protection while work is underway.

Renton Questions

My Renton yard is on low ground near the old river channels. Will seed rot?

Seed struggles in standing water. We check drainage first and recommend grading or a drain line if water sits.

Do plateau lots need erosion control for a simple lawn?

If the lot slopes toward a street or neighbor, a short run of silt fence until the grass is up is cheap insurance.

The soil on my old industrial lot is gravelly and gray. Can it grow grass?

Usually with a few inches of clean topsoil spread and graded before seeding.

Can you handle silt fence for a large commercial site?

Yes. We install long runs of silt fence and inlet protection, then hydroseed open areas.
